Shippers Supply Inc. is a privately held company founded by Ron Brown in 1975. In its early years, the company focused on manufacturing corrugated custom printed and stock boxes in small lots. Ron quickly saw an opportunity in diversifying the product line; after all, people who buy boxes need labels to put on them, tape to close them, loosefill to fill the void space, and the list goes on.
Shippers Supply keeping people involved
Ron Brown started Shippers supply in 1975 with 3 employees and a small office in Edmonton. Today Ron has 10 locations spread out over Western Canada and Ontario and has over 200 employees. Ron attributes his early success by being able to communicate effectively with his staff and to maintain a down to earth and personal connection.
Ron states, “It was nice to be able to walk about the office and warehouse and know everyone by name and to provide information to my staff while circling the water cooler”.
Expanding is an essential part of every organization and inspite of all the positive aspects of Ron’s growth; it also experienced challenges. Getting out to all the locations and maintaining effective communications with executives and front line staff became one of Ron’s main concerns. Ron’s challenge was how to effectively grow and still maintain a level of communication that he was satisfied with.

Ron states, “You can never replace face to face communication; however ourCEWS is as an effective tool as I have seen to be able to provide a variety of information via a variety of different types of media. With ourCEWS my staff can push out corporate wide Events and Announcements keeping my staff in touch on what’s going on around Shipper Supply. The best part is that I get to engage my staff using Forums and White Boarding, it’s a great way for my staff to participate and we get some great ideas and information from our employees”.
